Integrating the nature and process of science: Samples of modified lessons

Almost any lesson can be modified to better incorporate, reinforce, and make explicit the nature and process of science. To see how, visit Modifying your current lessons and Additional teaching tips and strategies. The lessons below provide examples of this:

  • How do animals move? is a textbook activity in which students cut out pictures of animals, color them, identify body parts, and then move the cards into groups depending on how the animals move. In the standard version, an extension is included to observe real animals outside and to watch them move. To better highlight the nature and process of science, this simple activity has been modified as Watching animals move.

  • Compare rocks is a textbook activity in which students look at rocks and minerals and then list the ways the samples pictured are the same and different. In the standard version, the students then draw a way that they have seen rocks used in buildings or outdoors. To better highlight the nature and process of science, this simple activity has been modified as Comparing rocks.
